Working With Others (Fri., 2 PM) has recently changed from the Beginners meeting format it had begun with in August, 2002, using the Living Sober book, to a Step format meeting. [4/29]
The Seaview Group (Fri., 7 PM) at SIUH North appears to have stopped meeting. [4/25]
"The Family Afterward" Group (Fri., 8 PM), has moved from the basement cafeteria to the main floor conference room of SIUH South. [4/4]
The St. George Step Group (Sat., 5 PM), is reported to have closed, at least temporarily. [3/22]
The New Hope Group (Fri., 10 AM), which had closed temporarily at the start of the month, will re-open on March 21 in its new location: Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2018 Richmond Ave. (between Signs Rd. & Rockland Ave.) [3-3, 3-13-08]
The Rainbow & Friends Group (Thurs., 7 PM) has moved to 25 Victory Blvd./Bay St. (upstairs). [12-27-07, 2/21/08]
Open Arms/Exodus (Tues. & Fri., 9 AM), has been removed from the meeting lists, and may have actually closed due to diminished attendance. Begun in March, 1988, largely as an adjunct to Bayley Seton Hospital's Open Door treatment program, with mandated attendance by its own clients and Amethyst House residents, the meetings moved several years ago to the out-patient program's facility at 427 Forest Ave. The meetings had long lost any focus on recovery from alcoholism, such as would qualify them as being part of A. A. [2-15-08]
As Bill Sees It (Fri., 1 PM), which had met for several years at 427 Forest Ave., appears to have closed, per report from the facility and former attendees. [2-15-08]
Early Risers (Tues., 10:30 AM), which opened in August of 1978, has closed, due to lack of members. There are reports that the 'sober club' in Port Richmond will claim the group to have voluntarily 'moved' to their facility in the near future. Given that the primary cause of the demise of the group, was competiton from said 'club' and its self-created meetings, such reports will be considered for what they are worth. [2-15-08]
The Friday Nite Big Book Discussion Group has been added to the meeting lists. The group, which began on July 13, 2007, meets Fridays at 10:30 PM at Bethel United Methodist Church, 7033 Amboy Rd./Page Ave. The format of the meetings is given as "Big Book-based". [2/14/08]
The Came to Believe Group has been added to the meeting lists. The group, which began on April 12, 2007, meets Thursdays from 7:45 to 9 PM at the Church of St. John Neumann, 1380 Arthur Kill Road. The format of the meetings is given as "Big Book-based". [6-27, 8-2-07, 1/14/08]
The H.A.L.T. II Group (Thurs., 7 PM) has been added to the meeting lists. The group began meeting On July 26, 2007 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 7033 Amboy Rd./Page Ave. The format of the meetings is closed discussion of issues in sobriety, with a particular focus on problems with anger. [6-28, 8-21, 1/14]
The Beachcombers I Group (Tues., 8 PM) has changed its format from Steps/Traditions to Closed Discussion. It also is now a non-smoking meeting. [1-17-08]
The Young People's Group of S. I. [Wed., now 7:30 PM] returned to its original Open Discussion format on July 18, while retaining its traditional focus on early sobriety. Also, as of September 5, the group's meetings begin at 7:30 PM and end at 8:45 PM, a half hour earlier in each case. [7-12, 8-29-07]
After several years' experience, it has become our policy to add new groups and meetings to the printed and online lists only after they've been in business for a while, to be sure that they are viable, well supported and likely to last. In the meantime, it has been suggested that they could be included in the secretary notes, for the information of our members. They will therefore be posted here, if requested by the meetings in question, until definitely established or otherwise.
For those wondering why the ‘Foggy Bottom Group’ (12/1/06) and its many meetings at the Port Richmond ‘sober club’ (12/1/06) are not listed here or in our printed lists, please inquire of The Editors.
Please Note – Alcoholics Anonymous is founded on its autonomous groups. The meetings a group holds are just part of its “primary purpose” (per our 5th Tradition) of carrying its message of sobriety to those who still suffer from alcoholism. Ideally, planning how best to do so is the “business” of our “business meetings”. For suggestions on how we might do so, The A. A. Group pamphlet is an excellent start.
All listings in these notes are by group, rather than the more common designation by location. This in part may help avoid the impression that we are affiliated with the places we meet in, contrary to our 6th Tradition. Better yet, we hope it may encourage members to become an active part of these groups — to join a group in the first place, or to encourage the groups in further A. A. activity. Along these lines, our A. A. expression ‘commitment’ might be transformed from a temporary job that we ‘take’, here or there, for a period of months, to a long-term commitment we ‘make’ ... to a specific, ongoing group of A. A. members.
We apologize for the puzzlement this may cause at first. Those used to hearing “St. Roch’s” (Monday nights) and “St. Mark’s” (Saturday mornings), may wonder what on earth the “Mariners Harbor Group” and “Good Mornin’ Group” might be. We hope the confusion is only temporary, and that the reminder that these are actually meetings of groups will in some way help our work.
Unfortunately, it must also be noted that organizations which claim to be A. A. groups, while severely violating A. A.'s Traditions, will not be listed as A. A. groups in any way, including in these secretary notes. The Traditions are too important to the well-being, and even the survival, of A. A. to be trampled on, no matter how attractive such a ‘meeting’ may appear.
Finally, you may have noticed that the Sunnyside Group met for years in Bulls Head, and meets in Port Richmond now – the St. George Step Group in Tompkinsville – the Pleasant Plains Group in Oakwood – and (our favorite) the Mariners Harbor Group meets in Port Richmond, while the Port Richmond Group meets in Mariners Harbor...in the very place where the Mariners Harbor Group began!...
No doubt there are reasons – which would be of interest to our archives – but don't worry too much. Wherever they are, A. A. works! [Note]
