As a service to our members, as well as in a spirit of cooperation, we now have listings (entirely unofficial, unaffiliated and not guaranteed for accuracy) of both the Staten Island Al-Anon and Staten Island Narcotics Anonymous meetings available on our web site. The 22nd Annual Christmas Eve Marathon will be held December 24 at Moore High School, 100 Merrill Ave./Arlene St., from 8 AM to 1AM! Individual groups are invited to display banners and sponsor meetings that will be held every even hour, from 10 AM to midnight. Planning meetings are being held every Sunday at 5 PM at Ascension Church (Clove Lakes), before the Victory Group's 6 PM meeting. Come and get involved! [10-31-05]
The A. A. for the Homebound committee of S. I. General Service, which brings meetings to the homes of those who cannot get out to regular meetings, has a new phone number: (718) 720-3130. [9-29-05]

As of December 9, the After Hours candlelight meeting (Fri., 10:30 PM) has resumed meeting. [12-16-05]
Beginning November 19, the Great Kills Group open speaker meeting (Sat., 9 PM) has a guest Al-Anon speaker the 3rd Saturday of each month. [11-4-05]
The Friday, 8 PM meeting of "The Family Afterward" Group is an Open (2-Speaker) meeting. It had been incorrectly listed for some time as an Open Discussion meeting. [7-26-05]
The Plant-a-Seed Group (Wed., 1 PM) is no longer meeting. [7-25-05]
The new Sisters in Sobriety group holds a closed discussion meeting (Wed., 1 PM) for women at Traditions House, 6581 Hylan Blvd. at Mt. Loretto. [7-17-05]

Please Note – Alcoholics Anonymous is made up of autonomous groups. The meetings a group holds are but one part of its primary purpose (as suggested in the 5th Tradition) of carrying its message of recovery. A visit to the business meeting of a fully active group will give an idea of the potential scope of group work. Recommended, for example, as worth visiting on their own, are the business meetings of the First Step Group (third Tuesday) or the Port Richmond Group (first Friday) each month, following the regular meetings. In order to emphasize the importance of the A. A. group, all listings here are by group rather than the (common) designation by location. This in part may help avoid the impression that we are affiliated with the places we meet in, which would run counter to our Traditions (#6, in this case). More importantly, it may encourage members to become an active part of these groups–for example, to join a group in the first place, or to encourage their groups in further A. A. activity. Along these lines, our A. A. word 'commitment' might be transformed from a temporary job that we 'take', here or there, for a period of months, to a long-term commitment we 'make'...to a specific, ongoing group of A. A. members. We apologize for the puzzlement this may cause at first. Those used to hearing 'St. Rochs' (Monday nights) and 'St. Marks' (Saturday mornings), may wonder what on earth the 'Mariners Harbor Group' and 'Good Mornin' Group' might be ... we hope the confusion is only temporary, and that the reminder that these are actually meetings of groups will in some way help our work. For those poor souls who identify their meetings as 'Traditions House' or 'the Snake Pit', some extra research may be needed. And when announcing anniversaries, we'd especially be glad to hear (for instance) which Traditions House group is meant (more than one meets there on a given day) ... and which 'Prince's Bay Step Group' (I or II) is meant, given that they also meet on the same evening, but at different times and stations. Finally, for those wondering why the Sunnyside Group meets in Bulls Head – the St. George Step Group in Tompkinsville – the Pleasant Plains Group in Oakwood – and, as of this past August, not only does the Mariners Harbor Group meet in Port Richmond, but now the Port Richmond Group meets in Mariners Harbor – in the very place where the Mariners Harbor Group began!... The names are historical, not geographical, and A. A. is paradoxical but practical – it works! |
