Last updated April 30, 2008

Changed Since the February 14, 2008 Printing

Working With Others (Fri., 2 PM) changed in April from the Beginners meeting format it had begun with in August, 2002, using the Living Sober book, to a Step format meeting. [4/29]

The Seaview Group (Fri., 7 PM) at SIUH North appears to have stopped meeting. [4/25]

"The Family Afterward" Group (Fri., 8 PM), has moved from the basement cafeteria to the main floor conference room of SIUH South. [4/4]

The St. George Step Group (Sat., 5 PM), is reported to have closed, at least temporarily. [3/22]

The New Hope Group (Fri., 10 AM) will re-open on March 21 in its new location: Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2018 Richmond Ave. (between Signs Rd. & Rockland Ave.) [3-13-08]

The New Hope Group (Fri., 10 AM) has stopped meeting while it searches for a new location. [3-3-08]

Changed Since the March 14, 2007 Printing

On February 28 the Rainbow & Friends Group (Thurs., 7 PM) moved to their new location, 25 Victory Blvd./Bay St. (upstairs). [12-27-07, 2/21/08]

Open Arms/Exodus (Tues. & Fri., 9 AM), has been removed from the meeting lists, and may have actually closed due to diminished attendance. Begun in March, 1988, largely as an adjunct to Bayley Seton Hospital's Open Door treatment program, with mandated attendance by Amethyst House residents, the meetings moved several years ago to the out-patient program's facility at 427 Forest Ave. The meetings had long ago lost any focus on recovery from alcoholism, such as would qualify them as being part of A. A. [2-15-08]

As Bill Sees It (Fri., 1 PM), which had met for several years at 427 Forest Ave., appears to have closed, per report from the facility and former attendees. [2-15-08]

Early Risers (Tues., 10:30 AM), which opened in August of 1978, has closed, due to lack of members. There are reports that the 'sober club' in Port Richmond will claim the group to have voluntarily 'moved' to their facility in the near future. Given that the primary cause of the demise of the group, was competiton from said 'club' and its self-created meetings, such reports will be considered for what they are worth. [2-15-08]

The Beachcombers I Group (Tues., 8 PM) has changed its format from Steps/Traditions to Closed Discussion. It also is now a non-smoking meeting. [1-17-08]

The Rainbow & Friends Group (Thurs., 7 PM) will be relocating at some time after February 7, 2008 to 25 Victory Blvd./Bay St. (upstairs), pending completion of reconstruction there. Until then, the group continues to meet at 380 Van Duzer St./Beach St. [12-27-07, 2/15/08]

The Friday Nite Big Book Discussion Group has been added to the meeting lists. The group, which began on July 13, 2007, meets Fridays at 10:30 PM at Bethel United Methodist Church, 7033 Amboy Rd./Page Ave. The format of the meetings is given as "Big Book-based". [2/14/08]

The Came to Believe Group has been added to the meeting lists. The group, which began on April 12, 2007, meets Thursdays from 7:45 to 9 PM at the Church of St. John Neumann, 1380 Arthur Kill Road. The format of the meetings is given as "Big Book-based". [6-27, 8-2-07, 1/14/08]

The H.A.L.T. II Group (Thurs., 7 PM) has been added to the meeting lists. The group began meeting On July 26, 2007 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 7033 Amboy Rd./Page Ave. The format of the meetings is closed discussion of issues in sobriety, with a particular focus on problems with anger. [6-28, 8-21, 1/14]

The Young People's Group of S. I. [Wed., 8 PM] returned to its original Open Discussion format on July 18, while retaining its traditional focus on early sobriety. Also, as of September 5, the group's meetings begin at 7:30 PM and end at 8:45 PM, a half hour earlier in each case. [7-12, 8-29-07]

The founding year of the St. Mark's Step Group has been changed from 1971 to 1974, per Charlie S, co-founder of the group, speaking at the group’s 33rd group anniversary. [7-18-07]

Please note that all meetings at the Messiah Lutheran Center (1 PM, Thurs.-Sat.) are held at the Kroon Center, 195 Jefferson Blvd./Drumgoole Road East — not the pastor's residence at 174 Jefferson Blvd. This applies to the Annadale Group, Friday Afternoon Step Group and Steps by the Sea groups, respectively. [5-29-07]

Changed Since the October 9, 2006 Printing

The “A Way Out” Group (Sun., 6:45 PM) closed in mid-January. [2/2]

As of January 13, the Great Kills Group (Courage to Change) (Sat., 9 PM) is an open discussion (topic) meeting (incorrectly listed at first as closed discussion). The 3rd Saturday each month will continue to feature a speaker each from A. A. and Al-Anon, now with discussion from the floor as well. All meetings had been 'open speaker' in format since 1952. [1/12, /18]

The Institutions Committee is no longer at the Spring Bldg., and will meet this month (1/22) at 252A Port Richmond Ave., at the new time of 7 PM. The Committee hopes to find a more central location for future meetings. [12/22, 1/5, /7]

The 3rd & 11th Steps Group (Thurs., 8 PM), formerly at the Spring Bldg., will begin meeting 1/11 at 252A Port Richmond Ave. [12/22, 1/5, /7]

The Sunlight of the Spirit group (Tues., 7:30 PM, Closed Discussion) held its first meeting on January 2 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2018 Richmond Ave./~Rockland Ave. [Note][12/31]

The Beachcombers I group's meetings became smoke-free in December, 2006. This may have been the last smoking-allowed meeting in Staten Island.[12/26]

The Tuesday Shields group meeting, which formerly began at 7:30 PM, now runs from 7:15 PM to 8:15 PM (sharp). [10/25]

Changed Since the March 31, 2006 Printing

The A Way Out Group (Sun., 6:45 PM) moved to Messiah Lutheran Church, 174 Jefferson Blvd./Drumgoole East. [10/8]

The Beachcombers I group (Tues., 8 PM) reopened at its old location, the VFW Hall at 575 Mill Rd./Guyon Ave., following a brief closing. [10/4]

The Traditions Group/New Beginning Group traditions meeting (Tues., 7:30 PM), which began in May, 2000 as the Traditions Group and merged with the New Beginning Group in 2002, voted October 3, 2006 to close. [10/3]

The First Day Group (Sun, 9:00 PM), which had stopped meeting at St. Ann's rectory at the end of July, reopened October 1 in the basement of the New Dorp Moravian Church's gym, 2205 Richmond Rd./Todt Hill Rd. [9/30]

The first week in October the Beachcombers II (Wed., 10 AM)) and K.I.S.S. II Group (Thurs., 10 AM) meetings, formerly at the Mill Rd. VFW Post in Oakwood Beach, reopened at Christ Lutheran Church, 121 Cleveland Ave. [9/22]

The 4 PM South Shore meetings have rearranged themselves as follows. The H.O.P.E. Group now meets on Mondays and Wednesdays at Bethel Methodist Church, 7033 Amboy Rd./Page Ave. The H. O. W. Group meets Tuesdays and Fridays at Christ Lutheran Church, 121 Cleveland Ave., in Great Kills, and is now Open Discussion in format.. The Thursday afternoon meeting has not yet reopened. [Note][9/13]

The First Day Group (Sun, 9:00 PM) stopped meeting at St. Ann's Rectory at the end of July, 2006. (See 9/30 note above.) [9/3, /7]

It appears that the After Hours group members (Fri., 10:30 PM., Huguenot Reformed Church) decided some months ago to suspend meetings (for the summer ...), due to low expected attendance. The group has closed twice before without giving public notice. It will most likely not be listed again as an A. A. meeting, in the event of a re-appearance, until it demonstrates continuous stability and responsibility. [8/24]

As of July 11, the Open Arms/Exodus Group (Tues. and Fri., 9:00 AM) moved to the Silverstein building at 427 Forest Ave./Kissel Ave. The group, apparently a merger of earlier Open Arms and Exodus Group meetings, had met since 1988 at Bayley Seton Hospital, being closely connected with the Open Door out-patient program there. The connection remains, Silverstein being the location of the related St. Vincent's Hospital treatment program. By their very nature these meetings, being largely attended by clientele of the two treatment programs, who may or may not have drinking problems, cannot be considered closed A. A. meetings of any kind. They were mistakenly listed as Beginners meetings prior to 8/06. [6/24, 7/17, 12/21]

The K.I.S.S. II group (Thurs., 10:00 AM) resumed meeting on June 8 at the Oakwood Heights V. F. W. on Mill Rd., following a 3-week closure. [6/8]

The Porch Group (Sat., 2:30 PM) moved this month to the Unitarian Church Parish Hall at 312 Fillmore St./Clinton Ave. (where the 4 O'Clock Lounge Group meets on weekday afternoons). This followed announcement of the closing of their former meeting place, the St. Paul's Elementary School a few blocks away. The group had met there since the 1980's, after a peripatetic beginning (1979 ff.) in the Snug Harbor grounds. [5/30]

As of June 3, the Great Kills Group Saturday night speaker meeting (Sat., 9:00 PM) moved to Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish House, 5371 Amboy Rd./~Huguenot Ave. [Note] This Saturday night meeting had changed its name in December, 2005 to the Great Kills (Courage to Change) Group. The Monday night branch of the group, which had in practice operated as a separate group for many years, is now listed as Great Kills Group II, and remains at Christ Lutheran Church in Great Kills. [5/26]

The chair (DCMC) of the SI General Service Meeting requested on May 7 that we not list that body's upcoming Group Officers Workshop in the secretary notes. Accordingly, after this Sunday's GSM, until the matter is clarified, we will no longer list S. I. General Service events, except for the upcoming Share-a-Day on June 24, since that event involves a great many members not part of the General Service Meeting. [5/9]
